Must be a United States Citizen
Must be at least 21 year of age
Must have a high school diploma or GED
Must have a SC driver's license with a clean driving record
Must have a clear criminal history with no criminal convictions or pleas prior to conviction
Copy of birth certificate or naturalization papers (US citizenship is required for a sworn position
Copy of High School Diploma or GED, copy of highest college degree earned if applicable
Copy of Social Security Card
A certified driving record for any state that you have lived in within the past 5 years
For military personnel, a copy of the DD-214 form.
Any copies of certifications or licenses which so special qualifications. If you are an out of state officer you will need to provide a copy of your out of state certification and a transcript or copy of the out of state training academy curriculum with total hours of training received.
Any application that is received without any of the previous documents will be considered incomplete and will not be processed until all documents are received.

Applicants must successfully complete the Police Officer Selection Test (POST). Uncertified candidates must also complete the Police Officer Physical Agility Course. This is a timed course that includes running, jumping, crawling, stair climb, 150 lb. bag drag and other obstacles. Applicants that successfully complete the written test and physical agility test must complete the panel interview board. A Conditional Offer of Employment will be given after the interview board.
Post Conditional Offers selection steps include:
- Criminal History Check
- Reference Check
- Credit Check
- Psychological Examination
- Physical Examination and Drug Screening
The Final Offer of Employment will be given by the Chief of Police at the conclusion of the process.
Post Employment Training
Uncertified recruits or officers that have over 3 year's separation from law enforcement employment must complete the South Carolina 12 weeks Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy. Out of state officer transfers or previously in-state certified officers with a 1-3 year separation from law enforcement employment must complete at a minimum, the South Carolina 6 weeks Special Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy. Current certified, in-state officers with no separation from law enforcement employment are not required to complete either of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Programs but are required to complete the Simpsonville Police Department Field Training Program.
