Simpsonville Police Department first originated bicycle patrol in the early years of 2000. The bike patrol unit at that time typically rode during special events and occasionally throughout the city. For some reason, the bike patrol unit began to fade away.
In 2014, the bike patrol unit was re-established based on the rapid growth within the city. This unit embraces the idea of community policing by making themselves more approachable and accessible to the citizens of our community. The Bike Officer's primary responsibility is to facilitate positive police / civilian relations by interfacing with the general public throughout the city on a daily basis. The bike patrol unit provides the city and police department with many attributes, to include, but not limited to, public relations, crowd control at special events, quicker response, aids in more thorough patrol of parks and businesses and may be utilized to assist other divisions in accomplishing their task.
The bike patrol unit currently consists of three officers and is only a summer time position. As the agency grows, along with the city, the bike patrol unit will have the opportunity to expand and hopefully become a year round division.
The duties of officers assigned to this unit include: assisting patrol officers, responding to calls for service, coordinating special events, special assignments, patrol of parks and business districts, intelligence gathering and public relations.
It is the goal of the bike patrol unit to continue utilizing its advantages to make a positive difference in the quality of life by protecting our citizens from crime and the fear of crime while maintaining a positive community relation.
